(A personal photo of our family friend's son playing at the beach; photo from August 2015 )
I love to visit any beach on the East Coast. I've been very fortunate to spend a lot of time near the ocean when I go home to Virginia. Pictured above is Duck, North Carolina, where a family friend has a house 100 feet from the beach front. We do not typically go during the busiest part of the season, but it is guaranteed that we have at least two weeks there in the summer, a week in the autumn and spring break. My favorite time of year to be at Duck is late September. The ocean is still warm, it's not too hot or busy, and the smell of the water and sand is perfect.

OH MY GOSH, Christina: small world — because I have been to Duck!!! We actually stayed in Manteo, but we drove up to Duck, and I was enchanted. Wonderful! It was also in Fall, late Fall actually (Thanksgiving time) when most of the tourists were gone. How lucky that you get to go there often, and at less touristed times of the year.
Plus, I like how that picture in your post makes your whole blog feel like like seagulls flying along the beach... fabulous! Now I REALLY want to go to the beach! :-)
I LOVE it there. The best thing to do in Duck is to go to Duck Donuts and then sit on the shore to watch the sun rise. It's the perfect vacation spot.
Virginia! I come from Virginia! I grew up in Hampton and Norfolk and spent nearly half my childhood at Buckroe beach! I miss it so much. I adore the east coast. I've been to nearly every state over there. The harbors of New York, my hometown Buckroe, Myrtle Beach (classic), the coast of Georgia (so pretty) and of course the sunshine waters of Florida (I have an aunt and best friend in Miami and Tampa, lots of visiting!). It's so wonderful to meet someone else who is from Virginia and also who loves the beaches of the East Coast!
